Climate Detectives | The 2026 European Climate Detectives Summit
For three days, students from across Europe took on the role of Earth observation scientists at ESA’s 2026 Climate Detectives Summit. 120 secondary school students and their teachers attended the event at ESA’s Earth Observation Centre, ESRIN. Among them, students from the Lycée Monteil in Rodez represented France and presented their results on the impact of climate change on phytoplankton.

Aspiring astronauts land at the Cité de l’espace
On Thursday 28 May 2026, CNES welcomed more than 150 students and their teachers to the Cité de l’espace for the closing event for the Mission X, Moon Camp and Astro Pi projects, part of ESA’s ESERO France program. The pupils thus had the opportunity to present the work they had carried out over the course of the year to the ESERO France team and a CNES expert.

Climate Detectives | Climate detectives present their research
On 21 May 2026, 100 students and their teachers presented their climate research projects at the Climate Detectives 2026 closure event. The classes present were able to learn about the work carried out by CNES engineers on studying the Earth via satellite and to present the work they had completed during the school year.

Space Gallery Competition | Find a new Earth
In January 2027, the European Space Agency (ESA) is set to launch the PLATO satellite into space. Its mission will be to observe thousands of stars in order to search for and study Earth-like planets orbiting stars other than the Sun. In this context, the ESA is organising a new art competition entitled: “Find a New Earth”. The winner will see their artwork adorn a real Ariane 6 rocket and accompany PLATO on its launch into space in 2027.

CanSat | 2026 National Finals
The national final of the European Cansat High School 2026 project was held on April 3 and 4 at the Coulommiers-Voisins airfield. Organized by CNES and Planète Sciences, the event gave the 20 teams participating in the project the opportunity to present their work and launch their CanSats via rocket.

Space Gallery Competition | Space Weather
On 9 April 2026, the new SMILE satellite will be launched into space by the ESA with the aim of studying the interactions between the solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere. In this context, the European Space Agency has chosen ‘Space Weather’ as the theme for the Space Gallery Competition. Polar auroras, particle showers – what might space weather look like?

Webconference: ‘AI serving astronauts’
As in many fields, artificial intelligence will play a major role in space exploration. In this context, on Thursday 5 February 2026, CNES organised an online conference as part of the Moon Camp and Mission X projects. Presented by CNES engineer Denis Baron, it was an opportunity for more than 1,000 students to learn how artificial intelligence could help astronauts on future manned missions.

Webconference: “Light pollution as seen by satellites”
On Thursday, December 11, 2025, CNES organized an online conference as part of the Climate Detectives project. Presented by CNES engineer Marie-Odile Marché, it was an opportunity for more than 750 students to learn how satellites can be used to study light pollution.
