From June 26 to 30, 26 teams gathered in Granada, Spain, for the European CanSat 2023 Competition, organized by the European Space Agency, and hosted by Producciones Científicas y Técnicas in collaboration with EL Parque de Las Ciencias. The participating teams are the winners of their national CanSat competitions, organized each year mainly by ESA’s ESERO offices and national partners. The quality of the projects delivered by all the teams was astonishing, so the jury had the extremely difficult task of selecting the final winners!
France on top of Europe
Over a 4-day program, the high school students presented their project, passed a technical inspection, underwent a drop and radio communication test, launched their CanSat and presented their results to the jury. On launch day, a total of 7 rockets were launched at an altitude of around 1 km, carrying up to 4 CanSats each. In the afternoon, the students started working on their results and presented their findings to the jury the following day. After that, it was up to the jury to select the winners from all the incredible teams. And guess what? Last year, the French FinderSat team from Pontarlier’s Lycée Xavier Marmier won the prize for the most professional project at the European campaign in Bologna, Italy. This year, our French team from Lycée Henri IV Louis Le Grand in Paris took first place on the podium!

In France, the best CanSat project was awarded to AstroPanthéon. According to the jury: “Exceptional science. Originality of the experiment. Team dedication and attention to detail. The CanSat is properly designed to carry out the specific experiment. Extraordinary outreach initiative (by the team) to explain, in a public square in a foreign country (!), such a complex scientific subject to a wide audience.
At the closing ceremony on the final day, all participants received a well-deserved certificate and the winning teams in each category were announced.
