Since its launch by NASA in 2011, Mission X has involved over 500,000 students worldwide in some 40 countries. The educational project, piloted by ESA since 2018 and developed by space scientists and professional sports coaches working with astronauts, focuses on two objectives:
- Physical activities to master strength, endurance, balance, and team coordination;
- Scientific activities to enhance critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and teamwork.
This project instills in children aged 8-12 the need to eat healthily and exercise regularly to stay in good health, while raising their awareness of scientific and technical professions through the motivating image of the astronaut.
An exceptional year was celebrated at the Cité de l’Espace
For the 2023 edition, over 1,700 French students took part in Mission X. These six months of effort culminated in a day at the Cité de l’espace in Toulouse, with students from all over France in attendance.
The young participants received their certificates of participation and presented some of their favorite scientific experiments and sporting activities, under the watchful eye of Sébastien Rouquette, CNES CADMOS expert, supervising some of the European experiments carried out on board the ISS.
