For the 33rd French “Fête de la science”, from October 4 to 14, 2024, ESERO France and CNES offered various online and in-person events to help as many people as possible discover the work carried out by French space agency teams on the “Ocean of Knowledge” theme.
ESERO France and CNES launch the 2024 Science Festival
Firstly, the CNES Education Department was invited to the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace – Aéroport Paris-Le Bourget to present CNES activities linked to the study of the oceans through various educational workshops as part of the Fête de la science opening day. From satellite observations to Argos beacons and Memory games, over 500 people of all ages had the opportunity to discover the work and educational projects of CNES around the study and protection of the oceans.

A web conference to study the Earth with CNES experts
ESERO France and CNES also organized activities for schools during the 10-day science celebration. A web conference was held on October 10 for 1st and 2nd grade students. The conference was given by Raquel Rodriguez Suquet, Earth Observation Applications Engineer at the CNES Laboratoire d’Observation de la Terre (Lab’OT), who explained how satellite observations help us to better understand the causes and impacts of climate change on the Earth. This web conference was attended by over 900 people and is available for replay in French on the CNES video library.
Studying oceans to understand climate change
Finally, as part of the European Space Agency’s Climate Detectives project, ESERO France organized a challenge to carry out three experiments in order to better understand the causes and consequences of climate change on the oceans. Participating teams had two weeks to carry out the experiments and, like real scientists, report their results and conclusions on a scientific poster.
The entire ESERO France team would like to congratulate the 80 young people from elementary to high school who brilliantly accepted the challenge! Based on the quality, scientific rigor, and creativity of their scientific posters, a jury of CNES experts selected their favorite team:
“Climat Mission 2ème avenir”, CM2 students from Gabriel Péri school in Châteaurenard, Academy of Aix-Marseille
The jury would also like to highlight the excellent work and rigor of the young researchers in the :
- CM1 and CM2 students from EEPU Lasserre-Pradère, Toulouse Academy
- High school students from Lycée Saint Joseph – Concarneau, Academy of Rennes
This new edition of the Fête de la Science was a superb opportunity to meet and exchange with hundreds of people across France!
