Climate Detectives | Climate research by apprentice scientists

"Climate Detectives" challenge aims to introduce students to the scientific method by conducting a research project related to climate or biodiversity. For this first edition in France, two middle school teams took part in the project, and one of them even had the opportunity to travel to the ESA's ESRIN center in Italy to participate in the European closing event!

The Climate Detectives 2023/2024 project, organized by the European Space Agency and coordinated for the first time in France by CNES, ended on April 30, 2024. Among the projects submitted, 140 students participated in at least one activity of the Climate Detectives Kids challenge, and 30 students, divided into two teams, successfully completed a research project on the theme of climate change.

Students at Sainte-Thérèse Middle School in Laval studied “The Development of the City Center and a Neighborhood in Laval” with the main goal of identifying solutions to reduce the impact of flooding, which regularly affects the city of Laval. To do this, they conducted field observations and interviewed residents and local elected officials about future development projects.

DFor their part, students at Paul Esquinance Middle School in La Réole chose to focus on the causes and consequences of the wildfires that ravaged the Gironde region during the summer of 2022. To do this, the research team studied data from the European Sentinel-2 satellite and also carried out various experiments and measurements in the field to better understand the phenomenon. Their project was then presented at the Aquitaine final of the CGénial competition and at the European closing event held at ESA’s ESRIN center in Frascati, Italy.
